Chattanooga Valley Baptist Church Cemetery

This is a brief history of
the Chattanooga Valley Baptist Church Cemetery. This is from a book listing all those buried at the cemetery, my Aunt was so kind to let me borrow the book and make copies. Many of my Kelley ancestors are buried there. In fact for many years my dad said that this is where he wanted to be buried, next to his mother and dad. At some point he changed his mind and is buried in Chattanooga.
The Long family mentioned are also related, my Great grandmother Newby (Olivia Jane Jennie) was a Long.

Find a Grave and Tombstone Tuesday

About a year ago I discovered from a lady I met on the Find a Grave website that my Great Great Great Grandfather John Long and his wife were buried at the Lookout Cemetery. This lady was so wonderful to share LOTS of information on the Long Family with me. The Lookout Cemetery is near the Chattanooga Valley Cemetery where my Grandfather and Grandmother Kelley and other relatives are buried.
My family and I went out and found the Lookout Cemetery. We walked and walked and walked and never found the graves for the Long family. It must have been 100 degrees that day we were so HOT. I left thinking there were no markers.
Then I discovered that my Great Great Great Grandmother Adeline Burk was also buried at the Lookout Cemetery. I decided to put a photo request in on the Find a Grave website. On Sunday I received an e-mail from a very nice man who had taken the time to go to the Lookout Cemetery and search for the graves. They were not buried at the Lookout Cemetery.
He didn't stop there he took the time to search more and found the Old Lookout Cemetery about a mile down the road and there they were John and Elizabeth Long and Adeline Burk. He took pictures of the markers and posted them on the Find a Grave website. Because of the kindness of someone I don't know I now have pictures of my relatives graves. I hope to go soon to find the Old Lookout Cemetery.
If you haven't checked out the Find a Grave website please do.

Georgia Archives

I have used the Georgia archives website in the past several times but went back this week for the first time in awhile. It pays to keep going back to sites and looking for new information. This week I found the Death Certificate for my Grandfather(Edgar Kelley), my Great Grandfather(Hiram Kelley). The marriage license for my Grandparents Edgar and Fay Kelley, Fay's brother King Newby and Lillie Blair and my Great Grandparents D.H. Newby and Jennie Long.
The best part for me was being able to find all of the information online and for free! At this time in my life I don't have a lot of time and money to travel around to courthouses and libraries gathering genealogy information so websites like this are a great resource for me.
If you have family from Georgia check out this site. Some of the new information takes a while to find but it is worth the time.

Tombstone Tuesday

This is the grave of Mattie Allison who was the sister of my Great Grandmother (Olivia Jane Long Newby). The family referred to her as Aunt Sister. There was no date on the picture of Aunt Sister.

Long Family

In June 2007 my Aunt Betty gave me a picture of a Moses Long and wife. It is really a strip of three pictures about 1X3, a man, a woman and the same woman in a hat. My Great Great grandfather was named Moses Long. I do not know what he or his wife looked like. My aunt told me that the picture had belonged to my grandmother. Moses Long would have been her grandfather. He died in 1919 and his wife died in 1915. They did not have a son named Moses but he did have a nephew named Moses who lived in the same area.

The pictures look like some kind of photo booth picture the way they are made together in a strip. I am wondering if this could be Moses Long who died in 1919 in this type of picture? I would like to find out more about this picture. My aunt has since died and I have not gotten to see any more of the wonderful pictures she had. There may be more pictures of Moses Long to compare to this one.
