The Face of Genealogy
There are many faces which come to mind when I think of the Face of Genealogy. In fact I had another photo here and changed my mind. This photo was in a group of photos from my Aunt. They had been my grandmother's photos. The back of the photo says Mr.and Mrs. Davis and family and is addressed to L. A. Newby. My Great Great Grandmother was Lydia Newby but when I first saw the photo I didn't know who the Davis family was. After doing some research I found that Mrs. Davis in the photo was the grandaughter of Lydia. Her name was Ida Thurman Davis. Ida's mother was Bettie Newby Thurman the daughter of Lydia and King Newby.
To me This is the True Face of Genealogy, being able to take an old photo and learn who they were, how they were related and a little about them.

postmarked April 5, 1910
Rossville, Ga
addressed to L. A. Newby in Denver
names of the men on front are ? Hollingsworth, John Long, and Quitman Long
Liddie was my grandmother's sister. Liddie would have been 15 years old in 1910. She was writing to her grandmother Lydia Newby (her father's mother). Lydia Newby was living in Denver, where her daughter Mattie Newby Burdick lived. From this postcard it appears that her son Tom Newby was also living in Denver in 1910.
John Long and Quitman Long were Uncles on her mother's side of the family. Since she was asking if Uncle Tom remembered who the men on the front of the card were, they must have been friends. We are not sure when the Newby family moved from Franklin County,Tn to the Walker County,Ga. area, maybe this will help.

JUNE 1,2010 - How can it be June?
Wow! Where has May gone? It has been almost three weeks since I last made a post. Things get busy but I haven't completely forgotten Genealogy. I have been doing some research, at Family Search. com there are so many new things, Footnote.com has had the newspapers Free for the month of May, and World Vital Records had military records free for the month of May. I'm always glad to find information for free!
I've been thinking for awhile about joining one of the online genealogy sites but was unsure which one. I joined Footnote.com on Saturday. Why Footnote, you may ask? Because they had a wonderful offer (which I also love) $39.95 or 50% off. The offer was only good until May 31st, I told my husband that this is what he could give me for my birthday, but it would have to be early since the offer ended on the 31st. So much of the weekend was spent searching for never before seen information on our ancestors.I did find several items of interest, some of which I'm not for sure if it is our ancestor or just a person with the same name.
I found one item of interest on K. H. Newby. It is a Confederate States of Americia paper for K. H. Newby to purchase Nitre for the C.S. Nitre and Mining Service, May 1,1863. I know that K. H. Newby was a coal miner so this may very well be my K.H. Newby.
Also found in the Confederate Papers was a William Brumley, in Chattanooga, Tn. right name and right place but is it the right William Brumley? I found a William Brumley - Rebel Citizen - taken from prison to USA Gen'l Hosp. in Chattanooga,Tn on May 1,1864 and returned to prison on May 2,1864, age 24. This may not be "our" William Brumley because according to the information we have been given, William would have been 35 in 1864. The thing is we are not sure if the information we have is the correct information so more research will need to be done on the Brumley family.
I found my Great Great Grandparents T.L. and Janette Farrell and five of their 14 children along with T.L. Farrell's mother (this would be my Great Great Great Grandmother Farrell) and two of T.L. Farrell's sisters in the 1860 Census.
I hope that I continue to find information on Footnote.
During the month of May I also scanned many photos which my sister-in-law had let us borrow, Brumley,Girton, Kibble families. I've been so excited! Now to discover who all the people are!

Newby Family Photo and Another Home of Our Ancestors
This old photo isn't in the best condition as you can see from the scan. There are no names on the photo. One of my cousins said he remembered seeing this many years ago and he thought the baby in the photo was our grandmother, Fay Newby Kelley. It seems sometimes with these old photos it was as much about getting a picture of the house they lived in as it was the people. The people are such a small part of the photo.
I did some editing and zoomed in some so we can see the people better. The man and woman to the left could be D. H. Newby and Jennie Long Newby. I've seen several photos of D. H. Newby and this does look like him. I've only seen one of Jennie so I'm not sure about her. The baby could be anyone except for my cousin thought he remembered this being our Grandmother. The man holding the baby and the child on the right of the photo are a mystery. If I were to guess the man maybe Jennie's father, Moses Long. D. H. Newby's father was already dead when my grandmother was born, or at least we think he was.

Who Are These Children?
Another photo with no names! Aren't they cute? I really wish I had names. They don't look like any other children which I have pictures of. This was in with the Newby pictures which I got when my Aunt died.

Dayton, Ohio Home
This is the home of King and Lillie Newby in Dayton, Ohio. I don't remember meeting King and Lillie but I do remember my parents always sent them a Christmas card and school pictures of my brother and I.
When I was old enough to help Mom address the cards I always thought it was COOL that they lived on King Ave. King worked for Frigidaire.

Tombstone Tuesday - Lydia Newby Cantrell
The Newby family seemed to leave the area where they were born, some came back such as Lydia and Arnold Cantrell. Mattie lived in Denver and her brother Tom lived Roundup, Montana but they were buried in the Chattanooga Valley Cemetery with their Mother. Others left the Valley and only returned for visits, therefore, I don't have many tombstone pictures for the Newby's.

Jewell Newby Ledford
Jewell and Ralph Ledford
Jewell was my grandmother's sister, she was born 1902 and died 1991. She was the last of the Newby children.

This photo of Ralph and Jewell was probably made in the 1940's.

Wordless Wednesday - Edwin Newby
Edwin Newby was my grandmother’s youngest brother; he was born in 1909 and died in 1988.
I have several photos which are very old, such as this one, that have been glued to the black paper used in old photo albums. Is it best to leave them on the black paper or try to remove as much as possible of the black paper without damage to the photo?

Lydia Newby Cantrell
Since someone was so kind to put a name on the back of this picture I know this is my Grandmother's sister Lydia Newby Cantrell. The picture has Lydia Cantrell but I'm not sure if she was married at the time the picture was made or if the name was added later.
This next picture was made at the same time, however, there are no names on the back. I don't know who the other lady is in this picture. She does have on a wedding ring, can't tell about Lydia's finger. This could be a friend or cousin. I'm sure this is not my grandmother as I've seen pictures of her from this time period and I don't think she looks like the other sister, Jewell.
This next picture is Lydia in the middle and it looks like the same lady from the previous picture, she is very tall. I don't recall any stories about a female in the family being very tall, so maybe this is a friend. The lady on the left could be another sister Jewell, however, I'm not sure.
