Treasure Chest Thursday and "Genealogy" Spring Cleaning
If you haven't read the Olive Tree Genealogy post on Spring Cleaning Your Genealogy you should!
OK! I wasn't exactly spring cleaning my Genealogy but I was cleaning and found a Treasure Chest of Genealogy things I had forgotten about having and in some cases I'm not sure I knew about.
Recently we changed to Comcast Internet and had to have them come out to install. If you are like me in order for someone to get near the computer some things have to be cleaned out. So I was going through some things on a bookshelf and found two envelopes full of "Treasures".
In 1986 my husband gave me a Family History Book to record information in and I began my research. The first thing I did was write to two Great Aunts (both are now dead). The letters they sent me with so much information was in my found treasure, I knew the letters were somewhere but didn't know where. I'm so happy to have found them. There were obituary cards for my Grandparents and other relatives.
There was also a wonderful letter written by my mother-in-law to my husband in 1981. She had been to a family reunion and she wrote him about who was there and there was a list of all the people at the reunion.
My husband was in the Army at the time and out of the country. Recently we borrowed some pictures to scan and one of the envelopes had pictures of the 1981 Family Reunion!! WOW! Now we have a list of who was there this will help in putting names on the pictures!

Newby Family Photo and Another Home of Our Ancestors
This old photo isn't in the best condition as you can see from the scan. There are no names on the photo. One of my cousins said he remembered seeing this many years ago and he thought the baby in the photo was our grandmother, Fay Newby Kelley. It seems sometimes with these old photos it was as much about getting a picture of the house they lived in as it was the people. The people are such a small part of the photo.
I did some editing and zoomed in some so we can see the people better. The man and woman to the left could be D. H. Newby and Jennie Long Newby. I've seen several photos of D. H. Newby and this does look like him. I've only seen one of Jennie so I'm not sure about her. The baby could be anyone except for my cousin thought he remembered this being our Grandmother. The man holding the baby and the child on the right of the photo are a mystery. If I were to guess the man maybe Jennie's father, Moses Long. D. H. Newby's father was already dead when my grandmother was born, or at least we think he was.

Fun Friday
I don't know all the people in this picture but my Dad is the man in front on the left side and his younger brother is the man on the right front. Looks like they had an afternoon of fun playing ball. This would have been in the early 50's as Mom and Dad married in 1953 and I think my Mom is in the back middle (to the right of the pole).

Who Are These Children?
Another photo with no names! Aren't they cute? I really wish I had names. They don't look like any other children which I have pictures of. This was in with the Newby pictures which I got when my Aunt died.

Dayton, Ohio Home
This is the home of King and Lillie Newby in Dayton, Ohio. I don't remember meeting King and Lillie but I do remember my parents always sent them a Christmas card and school pictures of my brother and I.
When I was old enough to help Mom address the cards I always thought it was COOL that they lived on King Ave. King worked for Frigidaire.

Tombstone Tuesday - Lydia Newby Cantrell
The Newby family seemed to leave the area where they were born, some came back such as Lydia and Arnold Cantrell. Mattie lived in Denver and her brother Tom lived Roundup, Montana but they were buried in the Chattanooga Valley Cemetery with their Mother. Others left the Valley and only returned for visits, therefore, I don't have many tombstone pictures for the Newby's.

Jewell Newby Ledford
Jewell and Ralph Ledford
Jewell was my grandmother's sister, she was born 1902 and died 1991. She was the last of the Newby children.

This photo of Ralph and Jewell was probably made in the 1940's.

Wordless Wednesday - Edwin Newby
Edwin Newby was my grandmother’s youngest brother; he was born in 1909 and died in 1988.
I have several photos which are very old, such as this one, that have been glued to the black paper used in old photo albums. Is it best to leave them on the black paper or try to remove as much as possible of the black paper without damage to the photo?

Lydia Newby Cantrell
Since someone was so kind to put a name on the back of this picture I know this is my Grandmother's sister Lydia Newby Cantrell. The picture has Lydia Cantrell but I'm not sure if she was married at the time the picture was made or if the name was added later.
This next picture was made at the same time, however, there are no names on the back. I don't know who the other lady is in this picture. She does have on a wedding ring, can't tell about Lydia's finger. This could be a friend or cousin. I'm sure this is not my grandmother as I've seen pictures of her from this time period and I don't think she looks like the other sister, Jewell.
This next picture is Lydia in the middle and it looks like the same lady from the previous picture, she is very tall. I don't recall any stories about a female in the family being very tall, so maybe this is a friend. The lady on the left could be another sister Jewell, however, I'm not sure.

Ancestor Approved Award!!
Thanks Leslie at Lost Family Treasures and to Dorene at Graveyard Rabbit of Sandusky Bay for the Ancestor Approved Award!
I am to list 10 things about any of my ancestors which have surprised me, enlightened me, or humbled me.
1. While scanning Newby family pictures I was surprised to find how the Davis family was related.
2. Enlightened to learn what a caring and loving man my Great Grandfather, Jacob Ziegler was from reading the transcribed letters which he wrote to wife, Annabella, during the Civil War.
3. Surprised to find out that Great Great Great Great Grandfather William Edgemon fought in the battle of King's Mountain.
4. Surprised by how much I learned about Maggie Ziegler Edgemon from the letters which I received from my Great Aunt's things.
5. Surprised to learn that there was an ancestor who was a Doctor and she was married to a Lawyer!
6. Humbled by the amazing courage and strength of my ancestors.
7. Surprised to find my ancestors were not always serious people but took vacations and had fun just like we do.
8. Surprised to find my husband's Great Great Grandmother Green was buried about a mile from our house!
9. Surprised to find a lady on line who had Brumley pictures which we didn't have who e-mailed them to me.
10. Humbled by the wonderful people I've met through Genealogy research who are willing to help and share information!
In looking around it seems that everyone has been given the Ancestor Approved Award, I don't think I could find 10 people. If you find your way to Genealogy Fun and have not received the Ancestor Approved Award please feel free to pick it up here!

Sweet Poem
Spring is here and it's spring break for one of my kids so things are busy. I hope to get back to posting more
on the Featured Family soon. Happy Easter!
But for now I wanted to post this poem that our Vet's office sent us last week and I thought others might like to read too, don't know who wrote the poem.
