This is the marker for my Great Grandparents, Jennie L. (Olivia Jane Long) and David H. Newby. They are buried in the Chattanooga Valley Baptist Church Cemetery in Walker County,Ga.

Moss Rose

I love flowers but in no way have a green thumb. I love the Moss Rose and planted seeds this spring, guess they got too much rain and died. So I bought a plant which is what you see above.

The picture is before we went on vacation. It almost died while we were on vacation, forgot to ask the neighbor to water the flowers. I think it will survive.

When we bought our house the people left a planter of Moss Rose on the deck. We enjoyed them for several years but then they died. We've had them several times over the years but they only lasted one summer.

Vacation 2009

We went on vacation last week to Destin,Fl. If you haven't been it is a beautiful place.

It was pretty hot down there so we used lots of sunscreen. One day we had jellies all over the beach, which wasn't too much fun. Someone said they were babies, I've never seen any that small so I guess they were babies. Thankfully when we started seeing them we were just about ready to leave. We got to the beach early that day. The first day we went later and the sand was SO HOT it burned your feet! It was Good to have a vacation!

Maybe some day on vacation,I'll find an alligator to pose with like my grandmother did. That would be a cute thing to have. Next trip I'll look for one. Already planning next vacation!

Me???

It's good to be back at blogging! We had a little vacation last week. Vacation wasn't that long but with all the things you have to do before and after vacation it seems I've been away from my blog forever.

I have a more recent picture which I got from my Aunt a few weeks ago. Recent depends on how you look at it, it isn't a picture of one of my ancestors. This is a picture of my brother and I. At least everyone says this is me. I have no memory of the occasion. The date stamped on the picture says July 1964 but in 1964 I would have been almost 6, I'm pretty sure this is not me at 6. My Mom and Dad were bad at waiting years to get pictures developed, my Mom doesn't have this picture. Mom said this was me and my Aunt had my name on the picture. Notice I'm eating an ice cream sandwich with a fork, that sounds like me. When I was little, I always wanted food on a plate. Good thing I didn't grow up in the fast food era. I remember once when I was small my Mom and Dad decided to stop and get a hamburger at Dairy Queen and I cried because I wanted to go home and eat food on a plate!

I don't know where this picture was taken. It doesn't look like any one's house that I know.

Going through the pictures from my Aunt has been so much fun! Some of the people I know and some I've been trying to figure out. It is fun to see the pictures other people have of your family that you don't have.

Amazing Picture

Here is another amazing picture! There was no name on the picture but based on the graduation picture with a name we decided that the lady in white is Martha Newby or Dr. Newby. If you look closer at the picture you will see that the lady in white is checking the pulse and temp of the other lady. How neat is this picture. My husband thought maybe the picture was made for an advertisement.

I also scanned the back of the picture, it is so neat.

Tombstone Tuesday

I thought since it was Tuesday I would post the marker for Lydia Woodlee Newby and Lydia's daughter and son, Martha Newby Burdick and son Tom J. Newby. I posted the picture once before in Nov. 2008 but thought I would post again. Martha is the doctor whose picture I posted earlier today.

Martha Newby

Today's picture is from the new pictures which I just got, I'm still so excited. This is Martha Newby Burdick or as she put it on the back of the picture Martha Burdick Newby. This is my Great Grandfather Newby ( David Henry Newby) sister. She married a Burdick, maybe she was before her time and put her maiden name last.

On the back of the picture it says -

Class of 1900

I would post the back of the card but the writing didn't show up when I scanned it.

Everyone thought this was a man until we read the back of the card, maybe it was easier for a woman in Medical school in 1900 to not stand out as a woman.

She and her husband lived in Denver,Co. I have found them in the 1902 and 1904 Denver City Directories. In the 1910 Census I found Martha and her husband and her mother Lydia Woodlee Newby living in Denver. In the pictures I have found some of her here in Tennessee so I guess they came to visit family.

Martha died in Denver June 14,1937 she was cremated and I'm not sure who had the remains but Aunt Betty and Lydia (her sister Lydia or her Aunt Lydia) had the remains buried with Martha's mother and the remains of her brother Tom Newby. They are buried at the Chattanooga Valley Baptist Church Cemetery. The marker has all three names.
