Newby Family Photo

The photo at the top of the blog now is some of the Newby family. I'm sure that the man on the right is my Great Grandfather, David Newby. The lady behind him is his sister Mattie Newby Burdick and her husband, Edwin Burdick, is the man on the far left. I've seen enough pictures of these with names that I know who these three are. The man in the middle a think is my Great Grandfather's brother Thomas Newby, I've seen a few of him that had names and I think this may be Tom. The lady on the far left looks older so I think this could be their mother, Lydia Newby. Since I have not found a photo of her that has a name I can't be for sure. I think that Mattie looks like the older lady. The young boy I think my be my Great Uncle Edwin Newby.
My thinking is that this photo may have been taken sometime around 1916 after my Great Grandmother, Olivia Jane (Jennie) Long Newby died. When she died her son Edwin would have been 7 years old. This could also explain the sad faces.

Newby Family Featured

In January the Featured Family of the month was started, to highlight the surnames I’m researching. The first family featured was the Edgemon family simply because I had recently visited the family cemetery and had pictures of tombstones and some obituaries. I was excited to post these and to start the new Featured Family. At the time I felt the natural progression would be to Feature the Wilson Family next, since my Great Grandmother, Lettie Edgemon married a Wilson.

After I had a couple of people Terri and Alice express an interest in the Newby family, I decided the next family should be Newby. I hope Terri and Alice will check the information posted at the top of the blog to see if the Newby’s in their families could be related.

I know it looks like a lot of information but we have hit a brick wall with King Newby. We don't know for sure when or where he died and we have not found his parents.

Almost Wordless Wednesday

These are two more of my Great Grandmother's (Lettie Edgemon Wilson) brothers graves.
I don't know that John S. Walker is related but we thought it was pretty neat that he fought in the War of 1812, you don't see too many markers like this one, or we haven't. These graves are all in the Edgemon Cemetery in Ten Mile, Tennessee.

Tombstone Tuesday

I believe this is my Great Grandmother, Lettie Edgemon Wilson's brother and his wife.
It looks like this is the son of K. and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Edgemon.

Sam and Sarah Edgemon's House

This beautiful old house was built by Sam and Sarah Edgemon. From what my Mom has told me after Sam died their daughter Martha and her husband Woodrow Benton lived with Sarah. They bought the house from her and they lived there until sometime in the 70's or 80's when they sold and moved out west. This picture was made in the 50's.

Follow Friday - The Ties That Bind

I have never done a Follow Friday post but really felt that this blog deserves to be spotlighted!
I'm sure others may have already done a Follow Friday on this blog but even if it has been done Terri could not be spotlighted enough! She is a gifted writer who keeps you coming back to read more of her family stories. She is great at photo restoration. Terri recently suffered the tragic loss of her husband and best friend. She started another blog, The Next Chapter-Page 2010 to share the stories of her loss and tributes to her husband. Terri is an inspiration! Please check out Terri's blogs.
Terri you remain in my prayers! Stay strong.

Treasure Chest Thursday - Avon - Pretty Peach

Miram at AnceStories:The Stories of My Ancestors did a post back in January which you can find here, she showcased her Avon 1876 Cape Cod collection. I enjoyed the post and followed several of her links to Avon collections.
I have several Avon items which have been saved many many years. This is a Pretty Peach Cologne Mist.
This was a Christmas gift from my Aunt Lydia, not sure how old I was at the time. The Cologne was gone long ago but I kept this because it was so neat. Funny thing one of the Avon sites had the box and when I saw the box, I remember having the box. I no longer have the box but am very happy that I saved this cute Avon item.

Thank You Followers!

I started Genealogy Fun in November 2008. I think it was January 2009 before I had my first follower Terry at Desktop Genealogist Unplugged, sure do miss you Terry. I remember how excited I was. This feeling came back to me when I went to one of my new follower's blog and read a post about how excited she was to have 15 followers, A Rootdigger I joined her blog and another who had left a comment about how excited she was to have 12 followers, Cambria Co,Pa It does encourge others when you join their blogs. I don't always have time to leave comments everywhere and I don't join all blogs. Sometimes I just save them in my favorites and follow them from there.
In the time since I started this blog I've read many blogs which gave advise on how to attract more readers and followers. I've made quite a few changes in hopes of improving Genealogy Fun. There have been times I've wondered why people are followers of other blogs but not mine. Please don't take this the wrong way, this is not to complain or feel sorry for myself. Just a thought "why", not good enough, not on the right surnames, don't give the right information??
Now I just try to focus on doing what I started with Genealogy Fun.
l. To share the pictures and family information I have.
2.Share favorite sites where I've found useful information.
3.Help to organize the information I have.
4.I hope to connect with others researching the same families.
5.Since finding GeneaBloggers, read other blogs, I hope to learn more about how to make Genealogy Fun a better place to visit.
I try not to be concerned with the "WHY". I'm happy to have followers.
I WOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL 34 OF MY FOLLOWERS!

Treasure Chest Thursday - Pictures

This is a treasure for sure, my Grandmother, Hattie W. Ziegler and her sisters Elizabeth and Agnes. These three were the last of the Wilson children. I think this picture was made around August or September of 1980. My Grandmother had breast cancer surgery around this time and her sisters came to see her. We didn't know at the time but this would be the last time the sisters would see each other. Elizabeth had surgery (can't remember what type) then a few days later had a stroke and died, December 18, 1980. Then my Grandmother died March 18,1981. Agnes died November 29,1989.

Wordless Wednesday - Sidewalk Pictures

I have to say someone (can't remember which blog ) posted a picture and information on sidewalk pictures, I was going to link to their blog. If  you know who please leave a comment, I would love to link to the wonderful information they had.
This picture is my Grandmother, Hattie Wilson Ziegler, and her sister, they were shopping in downtown Chattanooga, Tn.
Here is the link to the wonderful story Sheri Fenley did on SIDEWALK PHOTOGRAPHERS.
Thanks Terri at The Ties That Bind for helping me out!

Tombstone Tuesday

This tombstone is my Great Grandmother's (Lettie Edgemon Wilson) brother and his wife Sarah.
Sam Edgemon died in July 8,1939 and Sarah died Dec. 25,1959. What a sad Christmas for her family to have their mother die on Christmas Day! They are also buried at the Edgemon Cemetery.

I think it is interesting how so many women were known only as Mrs._____.
I've even found several obituaries where the wife survived their husband and  were only listed as survived by wife, no name given. As if it were not important who they were only that they were the wife of this man. I guess women have come a long way.

I've heard my Mom speak of Aunt Sarah many times. She and her husband Sam had a beautiful house. Their daughter Martha Benton bought the house and lived there for many years. I remember seeing Martha and Woodrow Benton when they came to see my Grandmother.

Happy Birthday!

John Huff Ziegler, born Feb. 3,1894 and died Nov. 14,1981. This picture is my Great Grandparents, Will and Sallie Ziegler with their sons John (on the left) and Hobart (held by his mother). John H. Ziegler was my Grandfather (PAPA) he was a man of few words, easy going (almost all of the time).

He and my Grandmother (Granny) married April 2,1916, they had two sons and one daughter (my mother).
This picture was made in April 1966 at their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Granny died in March 1981 about two weeks before their 65th wedding anniversary. He doesn't look too happy here, if I had to guess because he had to put on suit and get pictures made.

Rebecca Edgemon Dugger 1872-1957

We don't know who the lady on the left is, center is Harden Edgemon, and left is Rebecca Edgemon Dugger.
Harden and Rebecca were siblings of my Great Grandmother (Lettie Edgemon Wilson). In looking at the picture of the Edgemon brothers and sisters I don't see one who looks like the lady on the left so maybe she is Harden's wife?

Above is the obituary for Rebecca Edgemon Dugger, who died in Febuary 1957.

Rebecca Dugger died before I was born. I remember her son Murel Dugger coming to see my Grandmother (Hattie Wilson Ziegler). They would have been first cousins. This was one of the advantages of living next door to my Grandparents, I got to meet all the people who came to see them. At the time I'm sure I didn't enjoy it because I was so shy.

Find a Grave

Above are a couple of  pictures of the  view across the Edgemon Cemetery. I had been to this cemetery many years ago but had no clue how to find the cemetery. Find a Grave is a wonderful way to find where your ancestors are buried and also to find directions to the cemetery. I have found many ancestors graves and in some cases even found pictures of their tombstones, thanks to the many people who take pictures and post them a Find a Grave. If you haven't used this site check it out.
