This is the marker for my Great Grandparents, Jennie L. (Olivia Jane Long) and David H. Newby. They are buried in the Chattanooga Valley Baptist Church Cemetery in Walker County,Ga.

Moss Rose

I love flowers but in no way have a green thumb. I love the Moss Rose and planted seeds this spring, guess they got too much rain and died. So I bought a plant which is what you see above.

The picture is before we went on vacation. It almost died while we were on vacation, forgot to ask the neighbor to water the flowers. I think it will survive.

When we bought our house the people left a planter of Moss Rose on the deck. We enjoyed them for several years but then they died. We've had them several times over the years but they only lasted one summer.

Vacation 2009

We went on vacation last week to Destin,Fl. If you haven't been it is a beautiful place.

It was pretty hot down there so we used lots of sunscreen. One day we had jellies all over the beach, which wasn't too much fun. Someone said they were babies, I've never seen any that small so I guess they were babies. Thankfully when we started seeing them we were just about ready to leave. We got to the beach early that day. The first day we went later and the sand was SO HOT it burned your feet! It was Good to have a vacation!

Maybe some day on vacation,I'll find an alligator to pose with like my grandmother did. That would be a cute thing to have. Next trip I'll look for one. Already planning next vacation!

Me???

It's good to be back at blogging! We had a little vacation last week. Vacation wasn't that long but with all the things you have to do before and after vacation it seems I've been away from my blog forever.

I have a more recent picture which I got from my Aunt a few weeks ago. Recent depends on how you look at it, it isn't a picture of one of my ancestors. This is a picture of my brother and I. At least everyone says this is me. I have no memory of the occasion. The date stamped on the picture says July 1964 but in 1964 I would have been almost 6, I'm pretty sure this is not me at 6. My Mom and Dad were bad at waiting years to get pictures developed, my Mom doesn't have this picture. Mom said this was me and my Aunt had my name on the picture. Notice I'm eating an ice cream sandwich with a fork, that sounds like me. When I was little, I always wanted food on a plate. Good thing I didn't grow up in the fast food era. I remember once when I was small my Mom and Dad decided to stop and get a hamburger at Dairy Queen and I cried because I wanted to go home and eat food on a plate!

I don't know where this picture was taken. It doesn't look like any one's house that I know.

Going through the pictures from my Aunt has been so much fun! Some of the people I know and some I've been trying to figure out. It is fun to see the pictures other people have of your family that you don't have.

Amazing Picture

Here is another amazing picture! There was no name on the picture but based on the graduation picture with a name we decided that the lady in white is Martha Newby or Dr. Newby. If you look closer at the picture you will see that the lady in white is checking the pulse and temp of the other lady. How neat is this picture. My husband thought maybe the picture was made for an advertisement.

I also scanned the back of the picture, it is so neat.

Tombstone Tuesday

I thought since it was Tuesday I would post the marker for Lydia Woodlee Newby and Lydia's daughter and son, Martha Newby Burdick and son Tom J. Newby. I posted the picture once before in Nov. 2008 but thought I would post again. Martha is the doctor whose picture I posted earlier today.

Martha Newby

Today's picture is from the new pictures which I just got, I'm still so excited. This is Martha Newby Burdick or as she put it on the back of the picture Martha Burdick Newby. This is my Great Grandfather Newby ( David Henry Newby) sister. She married a Burdick, maybe she was before her time and put her maiden name last.

On the back of the picture it says -

Class of 1900

I would post the back of the card but the writing didn't show up when I scanned it.

Everyone thought this was a man until we read the back of the card, maybe it was easier for a woman in Medical school in 1900 to not stand out as a woman.

She and her husband lived in Denver,Co. I have found them in the 1902 and 1904 Denver City Directories. In the 1910 Census I found Martha and her husband and her mother Lydia Woodlee Newby living in Denver. In the pictures I have found some of her here in Tennessee so I guess they came to visit family.

Martha died in Denver June 14,1937 she was cremated and I'm not sure who had the remains but Aunt Betty and Lydia (her sister Lydia or her Aunt Lydia) had the remains buried with Martha's mother and the remains of her brother Tom Newby. They are buried at the Chattanooga Valley Baptist Church Cemetery. The marker has all three names.

PICTURES!!!

I am so excited, I could hardly sleep! I have to keep going back to look at them, to make sure I didn't dream this. A couple of weeks ago I did a post about all the family pictures my Aunt Betty had. This was about the time a couple of my cousins decided to call the cousins in control and tell them the rest of us were coming out and tell them a date and time. They told them we wanted to talk about the estate. Well, yesterday was the day!

There was a stack of picture albums and small boxes, which they said was all of the pictures. I know how many pictures Aunt Betty had, several large plastic bins of pictures, a trunk full of pictures, and picture albums here and there in the house. I am thankful for the pictures which we were able to get, I just hate to be lied to.

There are some real treasures! Possible clue to a brick wall in the Newby family. I felt the only reason these pictures were there is because they didn't know who the people were. When I told them some of the stories which Aunt Betty told me they had never heard them.

I am so happy!! The first picture I had to scan was one of my Grandmother on vacation.

Hydrangeas

I love Hydrangeas. If you look close at the picture of my house growing up from the previous post you will see Hydrangeas. These were always there for as long as I knew. My mother and dad had them dug up when they moved. She has one at her house and I have part and my brother also has part. I don't know just how old they are but they are wonderful flowers. Here are some pictures of mine this year.

I remember one year growing up some people stopped and asked if they could take a picture of the Hydrangeas they were so pretty.

My How Things Change

Believe it or not these pictures are all taken from just about the same spot. The first one is the house I grew up in. My Mom lived here for over 50 years! Her parents bought this place when she was a kid. What wonderful memories of living there for all of us.

The second picture is during the development of the area. The last picture I made last week. The fire hydrant is the only way I can tell for sure, to the right of the hydrant was my front yard and to the left was my driveway. My How Things Have Changed!! It will be 20 years since they sold the place and moved. I'm so thankful they moved closer to us.

Tombstone Tuesday Late!

I'm always late it seems, but I thought I would go ahead and do this post. Back in March we went to Short Creek Cemetery in McMinn Co. Tennessee where many of my husband's ancestors are buried. I took pictures with my digital camera and my old film camera (I have to say I haven't used it much since I got the new camera last summer). I thought we got pictures of all the graves with both cameras but missed the grave of my husband's Great Grandparents Mary E. and William Green. William is the son or Eliza Jane Howard Green and Levi Green. They are both buried in Chattanooga.

Girton Family

The Girton Family is on my husband's line, his grandmother's maiden name was Girton. Most of the information we have was from a lady who I found on the Internet, she shared loads of information with us. She is a distant cousin. Anyway a few weeks ago a lady who is her 1st cousin contacted me by e-mail. She sent pictures of my husband's Great Great Grandfather and Great Great Great Grandmothers marker. How cool is that! She has some other things which she is going to e-mail us soon. I hope some day we can make a trip over to Winchester,Tn and find the graves but until then it is so nice to have someone share their pictures with us. Not that far but it is just finding the time to do all the things we want to do after all the things we HAVE to do!
I have some obituaries from the Chattanooga paper for a lot of Girton's.
I ordered these from the Chattanooga Library last week and got them in the mail on Monday. Really good service, I know there are those who would say I should go to the library and research myself and make copies. I really don't feel I have the time to devote to going and spending the day researching. I need to get busy, I have lots to scan. Then I need to e-mail them to this new cousin.

Vacation Pictures and Grandmothers

Grandmothers and vacation pictures reminds me of a picture that I saw once and really wish I had or at least had a copy of. We went a couple of years ago to spend the day with my Dad's sister Betty she had so many family pictures. There was a picture of my grandmother (Mama Kelley) on vacation. If you are like me you don't think of your grandparents as people going on vacation. My grandparents had families during the depression and didn't have very much money. I guess that is why my grandmother looked so happy, vacations weren't something she had very many of and she really enjoyed this one. She made it through the depression bringing up six children alone after her husband died a vacation must have been a REAL treat to her!



The picture was probably made in the 1950's. My grandmother went to Florida with her two daughters, Betty and Bonnie and their husband's. Aunt Betty said that her mother went in the ocean and enjoyed the beach and water more than she did. The picture was my grandmother on an alligator, not real of course! She was laughing and it just looked like she was having so much fun. Oh! how I wish I had asked Aunt Betty for that picture! She did give me about 10 pictures that day, I didn't want to ask for too much. Aunt Betty gave me some things that belonged to my grandmother. Pictures are such a treasure and there are so many wonderful ways to share pictures. There is no reason to put them in a box and hide them away in a closet.

I knew Aunt Betty was sick, but didn't expect her to die so soon! She didn't have any children and left her house and her sister Bonnie's house to my cousins that lived near. I have asked several times to borrow a few at a time and scan them and give all the cousins a CD of the pictures. It has been a year and a half, doesn't look like I'll ever get the pictures. Her Will said if any of the family wanted anything they could have it but no one has gotten anything. I'm trying to accept this as the way it will be and forget about the pictures. I know that I would love and treasure the pictures I just hope they will take care of them. Many times people inherit pictures and they end up in yard sales.
