Tombstone Tuesday

This tombstone is my Great Grandmother's (Lettie Edgemon Wilson) brother and his wife Sarah.
Sam Edgemon died in July 8,1939 and Sarah died Dec. 25,1959. What a sad Christmas for her family to have their mother die on Christmas Day! They are also buried at the Edgemon Cemetery.

I think it is interesting how so many women were known only as Mrs._____.
I've even found several obituaries where the wife survived their husband and  were only listed as survived by wife, no name given. As if it were not important who they were only that they were the wife of this man. I guess women have come a long way.

I've heard my Mom speak of Aunt Sarah many times. She and her husband Sam had a beautiful house. Their daughter Martha Benton bought the house and lived there for many years. I remember seeing Martha and Woodrow Benton when they came to see my Grandmother.

Hi Harriet, Think it was a generation thing. My mother used to always sign her name, Mrs. S.E. Banks.... I would never sign my name Mrs. George Adams --even though I love him very much. Mom used to think it showed respect to the husband.... These days, you never see people signing their names like that. Interesting, isn't it?
Hugs,
Betsy
